A jovem chegou a dizer que sua mãe não a reconheceu quando viu o resultado, e perguntou se aquilo não se passava de uma brincadeira.
Growing up heavy and tall, I always felt like I was impeding on other people’s space… Like I took up room others had more right to. I’d irrationally squish myself into a ball in airplane seats to avoid taking too much of an armrest, contort myself uncomfortably for multi-hour car rides to avoid touching the people around me, brace myself for the annoyed looks when someone realized they were sharing space in a car, plane, room, line… with “that” girl. This feeling of taking up space didn’t just translate to the physical. I stopped wanting to take up emotional space, to take up air in the room, in friendships, in relationships. I stopped wanting to say the wrong thing, make the wrong move…. to impede on other people. To burden other people. I still see that in myself sometimes, in my actions, in my inner dialogue. I’m retraining. But I also see it in the faces of women around me. In the faces of my students. In the faces of strangers and of friends. That worry that we are taking up space we don’t deserve. So to them I say this, guess what! I see that look of momentary panic (even guilt) on your face. Whether you’re feeling like you’re taking up physical, emotional, mental, social space – That’s your space! You don’t need to feel guilty for that! You need to own it. You need to fight for it. You need to challenge that inner voice that says you’re less with the one that says you’re pretty incredible. The magic happens when we stop trying to be perfect. We stop worrying about “taking up space” and we start accepting that we have just as much right to the air in the room as anyone else. Not more right. But not less. Own your space.
